| webLongDescription | Intended both as an introductory text for students as well as an accessible read for the general public, Understanding Architecture is a primer for understanding the basic principles of architecture. The volume is organized in to 12 chapters, based on key architectural themes (space, time, matter, gravity, light, silence, dwelling, room, ritual, memory, landscape and place). Each chapter begins with an introductory essay (approx 2,000 words) by Juhani Pallasmaa that includes a wide variety of historical examples from around the world, followed by 6 in-depth analyses of key buildings that further exemplify the theme (each about 1,000 words). Each essay has approximately 6 images that illustrate the buildings and ideas discussed in the essay text. Each building analysis is accompanied a plan showing the route of the 'walkthrough' given in the text as well as 5-6 photographs showing the key points of that building. By focusing on the direct experience of architecture and by combining a broad historical sweep with a jargon-free study of space, this book is a unique introduction to architecture.
