Pionero absoluto en su ámbito, su obra se ha expuesto en numerosos museos de todo el mundo y ha sido el referente para generaciones de fotógrafos. En 1982, Shore fue nombrado director del programa de fotografía del Bard College de Nueva York, donde actualmente ostenta la cátedra de arte Susan Weber Soros.
