Paul Delvaux (1897-1994) was born in Antheit, Belgium, and is famous for his unnerving, dreamlike paintings. Filmed when the artist was in his nineties, this documentary is the first of its kind to be made about Delvaux and shows him reflecting on his art, his family and the experiences that influenced him. It covers the full scope of his career, from the early years at the Royal Academy of Art in Brussels to the time when he stopped painting because of poor eyesight and started the Paul Delvaux Foundation in Saint-Idesbald. It includes an analysis of Delvaux's personal vision and the way in which the same elements, many of them drawn from childhood memories, have been incorporated into his work. Delvaux was frequently associated with the Surrealist movement; however, he did not share their political and moral standpoint, and ultimately this documentary is an appraisal of an artistic vision that defies categorization into any school or movement. |
