Web Author Description
webLongDescription Roy Lichtenstein (1923-97) was one of the leading practitioners of the Pop Art movement. His monumental versions of comic-strip images instantly captured the popular imagination. Such paintings as Whaam! (1963), showing the explosive impact as a jet fighter-plane strikes, have been critically acclaimed for their strength of composition as well as their power to communicate. Despite his high profile in the art world, Lichtenstein remained intensely private, and in this rare interview, filmed in his New York studio, he reveals the thinking behind some of the most arresting images in post-war art. He describes the devices by which he transfers 'found' images to large canvases and discusses the rationale behind his choices of particular comic-strip frames. This film traces the course of his career, from his early affiliation with Abstract Expressionism to his most recent work. Lichtenstein emerges as a disarmingly diffident yet memorably succinct commentator, both on his own creative development and on the American art scene in the period 1960-90.
