The Spanish painter Joan Miró (1893-1983) is one of the major figures of twentieth-century art. He belonged to the generation of avant-garde artists active in Paris in the 1920s and 30s, becoming associated particularly with the Surrealist movement. Miró's imagery derives from a personal world of dreams, fantasy and magic, and in this film, made only a few years before his death, he discusses his creative process with the painter and critic Roland Penrose. Commenting on key works from throughout his career, Miró provides engagingly modest and straightforward explanations of images that are often perceived as difficult to interpret, while pointing out the diverse influences on his highly personal vision. In the background is sensed the new mood of elation in Spain after General Franco's death in 1975, and the film follows in rehearsal an extraordinary experimental theatre project based on themes and images from Miró's work and Catalan folk culture. Miró is shown working in his studio on Majorca, which is filled with new paintings in progress as well as miscellaneous inspirational materials. These sequences in particular give this historic documentary a uniquely personal depth and immediacy. |
