The paintings of Paolo Veronese (c.1528-88) embody the mid-sixteenth-century golden age of Venetian art. Together with Titian and Tintoretto, Veronese was one of the most influential Venetian artists, and his success brought a constant stream of commissions from wealthy patrons throughout Europe. The artist's sumptuous colouring is beautifully captured by this film, which also analyses his technical achievements in perspective and group compositions. Against a European background of religious turmoil, Veronese's interpretation of the Last Supper in a setting of contemporary aristocratic opulence brought him into conflict with the Inquisition; his response was the most forthright claim for artistic licence in the history of art. A more private side to his art is represented by portraits and other easel paintings, often imbued with a sensual allegorical interpretation of Classical mythology. As well as examining Veronese's art, this film provides a vivid evocation of Venice at the height of its splendour. |
