Isamu Noguchi (1904-88) was one of the leading American sculptors of this century. Made in the last decade of his life, when he was still at the height of his creative powers, this film considers the full scope of his talent, which encompassed not only sculpture, but also calligraphic brush drawing, landscape gardening, furniture design, clay abstractions and theatrical settings for the ballets of Balanchine and Martha Graham. It follows him to the sites of his work in locations as varied as Detroit, Japan, Mexico City and Paris, and shows him working at the two bases he established - his studio in Long Island City and a stone-cutting village on the Japanese island of Shikoku. Born of an American mother and a Japanese father who left him at a young age, Noguchi claimed never to have felt a true sense of belonging or nationhood, and his sense of a nomadic, questing impulse was reflected in his constantly innovating attitude to his work. As the film progresses, the artist talks freely about his life and ideas, and on the role played by sculpture in the environment and in people's lives. |
