The French artist Christian Boltanski (b.1944) has achieved an international reputation for his distinctive installations, often based on the meticulous arrangement of ordinary 'found' objects. More recently, his installations have centred on dramatically-lit photographic material. In this intriguing and highly personal interview, Boltanski discusses the sources of his art and the course of his career to the 1990s, as well as being shown at work on recent projects such as the Dispersion, in which a room was filled with a deep layer of discarded clothing. At once quirky and deeply humane, Boltanski's assemblages create a sense of monumental presence. His excavation of his own past, and Jewish experience of the Holocaust, is combined with a refusal to categorize his art. This remarkable interview conveys the complexity of the relationship between individual experience and the momentum of history. |
