Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) was the leading artist of the French Romantic School, who brought to painting a revolutionary sense of the darker side of human nature. The film shows the development of Delacroix's work through dramatized readings from the artist's own journal, and covers the events which shaped his personal life and career, such as his trip to Morocco in 1832, his love affairs and his gradual decline into illness. It also shows the places where Delacroix spent much of his time, including the studio in the Place Furstenberg in Paris where he died, and the country retreat not far from Paris where he took refuge. Looking at important works that span his career, from his first painting for the Paris Salon, The Barque of Dante, to the final great mural commissioned for the Chapel of the Holy Angels in the Church of Saint-Sulpice, this film presents an invaluable insight into the public and private faces of one of the key artistic figures of nineteenth-century France. |
