webLongDescription

One of the most critically-acclaimed and influential contemporary artists working today, Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) played a major role in shaping the landscape of post-war German art. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe and being in touch with Joseph Beuys, his work – rooted in philosophical enquiry – ranges from intimate and personal explorations of German identity in artist-book formats to monumental public sculpture installations inviting the viewer to question their lived environments within a globalized economy.

Both socio-politically concerned and aesthetically compelling, his paintings, sculptures, books, installations and environments address war, identity, religion, morality, memory and history, offering opportunities to deconstruct and see alternatives for these assumed narratives. Visually, his oeuvre is suffused with an epic melancholy; his paintings ooze physical tactility, incorporating organic matter such as straw and sand, so that his canvases become sculptural and earthy. He uses repeated motifs throughout his work, including the empty dress, sunflowers, runes and towers, resulting in works both sinister and affective.

Richly illustrated, this clear and accessible monograph covers a full range of works from Kiefer’s entire career to date. It locates his practice within its historical and art historical context, addressing how he engages with such controversial subjects as the Holocaust, Judaism and Catholism. It follows his move to France and the development of La Ribaute – his studio-estate where he lived, created, staged and exhibited his artistic practice – where his work retained its monumental scale, but moved to a more internalized approach, self-mediatory, becoming his ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, his total work of art – and to his continued broader concerns of self-reflexivity and spirituality.
