Oak Publishing is an independent Copenhagen-based lifestyle publisher founded in 2013. Its biannual publication, Oak - The Nordic Journal showcases visionary talents through an insight into their life, ideas, and spaces. Sar: The Essence of Indian Design: Swapnaa Tamhane (b. 1976) is an artist and curator working between Toronto and Mumbai. She was formerly an editor at Phaidon Press and curator at Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery and Museum Abteiberg. She has been a recipient of fellowships from Kulturstiftung des Bundes and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, and has also received grants from Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Kunststiftung NRW. Her works have been exhibited at Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and KHOJ, Bangalore. Rashmi Varma (b. 1974) is a costume and fashion designer with an eponymous clothing line, based in New Delhi. She has exhibited her work at the V&A Museum, London; Textile Museum of Canada, Toronto; and Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto. She has received numerous grants and awards from the Ontario Arts Council and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. She has also worked with noted filmmakers such as Deepa Mehta as the costume designer for film 'Heaven on Earth' and assisted on 'Midnight's Children'. WA: The Essence of Japanese Design: Rossella Menegazzo is Associate Professor of History of East Asian Art at the Università degli Studi of Milan. She completed her PhD Course in Oriental Studies at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in 2009, with a dissertation on Japanese art history and photography. She has curated several events and exhibitions and is the author of numerous texts on Japanese photography, graphic design and ukiyoe. She is a regular contributor to a number of national newspapers, writing articles on Japanese culture and art. Stefania Piotti received her BA in East Asian studies from Ca' Foscari University of Venice specializing in Japanese textiles and the development of kimono design and patterns in particular. She has worked as translator and scientific coordinator in various exhibitions on Japanese art and as editor of Italian and English publications such as Imai. A Retrospective (Electa, 1998), Hokusai (Phaidon, 2004) and Japan Style (Phaidon, 2007). |

The Red Thread: Nordic Design celebrates this deep-rooted aesthetic, showcasing the diversity of design from Scandinavia and Finland via more than 200 objects - from everyday items to exquisitely produced decorative glassware, and from traditional handmade textiles to mass-produced products found in homes across the globe. The title is taken from a metaphor, common in the Nordic countries, of a shared and highlighted characteristic (like a long connecting thread in woven material), that runs through and connects themes, ideas, stories, and, in this case, design. Sar: The Essence of Indian Design: the Indian subcontinent is an amalgamation of peoples, cultures, languages and philosophies. Throughout history Indian culture has been subject to myriad different influences, from the Mughal empire to the British Raj to the now globalized nation in transition. Similar to Wa: Essence of Japanese Design, this book will trace continuity through the history of Indian design from antiquity to the present day. The book explores the elements that make Indian design so special, including the varied manufacturing and decorating techniques of the country’s incredibly skilled craftsmen, highly specialized object designs that have been refined over centuries, and ongoing responses to nature, technology, and necessity. The objects were chosen for their enduring quality and beauty, and their integral connection to Indian culture. Rather than following a chronological order or concentrating on the (often anonymous) designers, this book separates the objects into abstract categories anchored by Hindi words chosen to illuminate how each object fits into the lives of Indians. WA: The Essence of Japanese Design: through some 300 objects this book explores contemporary Japanese design: from everyday objects and packaging to interior design and lighting elements. Ultimately the book aims to explore the way in which Japanese design manages to harness its materials – whether natural or synthetic – and at the same time combines respect for tradition with forward-thinking and experimentation. The objects featured were chosen because of their strong Japanese character and the influence this 'Japaneseness' has had on Western culture. Rather than following a chronological order or concentrating on the designers, this book focuses on the objects and is categorized by material, highlighting the strong link between design and material in Japan. The book includes examples from some of the most important Japanese designers from Sori Yanagi and Shiro Kuramata to Naoto Fukasawa and Tokujin Yoshioka and an introductory essay about Japanese design by Kenya Hara. |
