Author Description Text by Masao Furuyama
Uri
Web Author Description

Masao Furuyama graduated in 1971 from the Architecture Department of Kyoto University, where in 1976 he completed a research doctorate in engineering. Since 1996 he has been professor at the Kyoto Institute of Technology, where he was appointed assistant director in 2004. He is the author of Tadao Ando (Basel, 1996).

webLongDescription Based in Kyoto, Japan, Waro Kishi (b.1950) belongs to the generation of Japanese architects that emerged after Tadao Ando. Although he has acknowledged the influence of the Osaka architect, Kishi has a sensibility all his own. Made primarily of glass and steel rather than massive expanses of concrete like Ando's work, Kishi's buildings are considered by some to be more delicate and subtle, and overall his designs are less driven by iconic forms. A self-described contrarian who preferred the works of such architects as Marcel Bruer and Richard Neutra when others were embracing Postmodernism, Kishi refuses such labels as "Modernist" or "Miesian". This is the first book to provide an overview of the innovative architect's career.
